What are your options?

  • You have the choice of color.
  • What material is it made from?
  • What size are you looking for?
  • What's your subject matter?
  • Digital Backdrops: Are they a better option?
  • Transportable maybe?

We'll be going into more detail about each of them in the Photography Studio Equipment Essentials article.

Which color would you choose to use for your photo backgrounds?

You have many options when it comes to choosing the best photo backdrop. To make things even more difficult, there are both solid monochrome studio backdrops as well as grungy dual and tri-colored backdrops.

Our experience is that one-color solid backgrounds are better for macro and product photography than white and black.

These grungy options are perfect for portraiture or draping over your props.

What is the material used to make studio backdrops?

You have two options:

Paper photo background-

This can be purchased in sheets or in large rolls.

Material photo backgrounds-

You can choose from a variety of materials, from heavy to light to thick to thin to even see-through. These materials are usually available in large rolls or pop-ups.

How big a photo backdrop do I need?

It all boils down to how large your subject matter is. A small piece of paper might be sufficient if your subject is a bloomer. If you are taking a family portrait, however, a larger roll of photo backdrop is likely to work better.
