A barcode is a small, machine-readable image of a line (strip) that represents data that basically describes something about an object.

Barcode scanner: It is mainly used to read printed barcode / matrix symbols. It consists of a sensor, transducer, and decoder, which is a light source, lens and light sensor that converts optical pulses into electrical pulses.

The scanner "scans" the white and black lines or barcode elements and illuminates the code with a red light. A barcode scanning sensor identifies the reflected light from the lighting system and generates an analog signal with an alternating voltage indicating the intensity of the reflection.
